Аннотация

The article reveals the main stages of the formation and development of the Carolingian Empire. It is noted that the son of Charles Martell, Pepin III the Short, decided to put an end to political uncertainty and removed the Merovingian kings from power. Then power passed to his sons Charles and Carloman, but Carloman died young and Charles began to rule on his own. He subjugated the Lombard kingdom and Bavaria, fought in Spain, ended the war with Saxony and created the grandiose Carolingian Empire. His heir, Louis the Pious, tried to reform the Empire, but left it in a state of complete anarchy. His heirs Lothair I, Louis II of Germany and Charles II the Bald started the "war of the three brothers", and in 843 they signed the Treaty of Verdun, which meant the actual collapse of the Carolingian Empire.
