Abstract: The collapse of the Soviet Union opened up an opportunity for the EU to participate in the political process in Central Asia. However, the EU's presence in this region, which is very far from Europe, remains very modest. The European Commission characterizes Central Asia as "a bridge to China, as well as to Afghanistan and the Middle East", which is also "a source of imports of significant amounts of energy resources for the EU”.
