Abstract

The article is dedicated to significant periods in the history of the Great Steppe, as well as the settlements
of Ulytau and Karkaraly, located in the Saryarka region. The study analyzes the origin and etymology of these names, as
well as the Turkic tribes that inhabited these territories from ancient times and later contributed to the formation of the
Kazakh people. The authors propose a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach, examining archaeological data,
written sources, historical traditions, as well as ancient Turkic, Chinese, Arabic, and Persian texts about the settlements
and sacred sites of the tribes that were part of the Western Turkic Khaganate, especially the Türgesh and Karluks.
Special attention is given to key themes and issues explored by such prominent researchers as V. Radlov, A. Margulan,
G. Yesim, V.F. Minorsky, A. Amanzholov. The article also presents the authors’ own conclusions and recommendations
for further research in this field.
